Realtime Technologies launches SHIMMER - a wearable health sensor for both connected and wireless environments
DUBLIN, Ireland and NEW YORK, New York, July 16, 2008-
Ireland-based Realtime Technologies, a leading provider of electronic
manufacturing and design services, today launched SHIMMER™, a hardware
research platform designed for wearable health sensing in both connected and
wireless environments. SHIMMER-which stands for Sensing Health with
Intelligence, Modularity, Mobility, and Experimental Reusability-incorporates a
technology that Realtime has licensed from Intel Corp. The platform features a
2GB removable storage capacity and low-power standards-based wireless
communication technologies that enable standalone applications such as robust
motion capture. SHIMMER can also stream data to other devices to expand the
scope of research applications. Customer shipments have already begun.
The announcement was made in conjunction with a trade mission to New York
sponsored by Enterprise Ireland and led by Ireland's new Prime Minister, Brian
Cowen, T.D. The licensing deal was facilitated by Enterprise Ireland, which made
the original introduction between the two companies.
When used as part of the BioMOBIUS™ Research Platform, which was developed
by the Technology Research for Independent Living (TRIL) Centre located in
Ireland, SHIMMER helps researchers reduce the time spent developing core
foundation technologies, allowing them to focus on their own specific research
and, subsequently, reducing overall development time for advanced medical
devices.
Realtime Technologies sees the development of SHIMMER as a significant
opportunity to feed the research ecosystem that ultimately serves to improve
patient care and quality of life.
Commenting on the agreement and product launch, Realtime Technologies' CEO,
Paddy White, noted, "We are excited to be working with Intel and we look
forward to bringing SHIMMER to a broader market. It's an excellent example of
how an industry leader such as Intel can work with specialized companies like
Realtime to collaborate on product development and improve time-to-market for
enabling new technology."
